Mavericks star Luka Doncic joins Slovenia for the Olympic qualifying tournament

It looks like Luka Doncic won’t be taking much time off from basketball after a grueling NBA season that lasted just over eight months.

The Dallas Mavericks star has officially joined the Slovenian national team ahead of the Olympic qualifying games, which will be held in Greece from July 2-7.

On Monday morning, the Slovenian Basketball Association posted a video on social media showing Doncić getting out of a black vehicle in front of the entrance to the Grand Plaza hotel and convention center in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The caption read: “Guess Who’s Back” and was a reference to Eminem’s popular song “Without Me.”

Doncic is seven days removed from the Mavericks’ loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. He dealt with several injuries in the playoffs, including a sprained right knee suffered in the first round, a sprained left ankle and a pec (chest) injury that required painkiller injections. Despite a number of ailments, Doncic appeared in all 22 of Dallas’ postseason games.

In the video, Doncic appeared upbeat but cautiously walked through the entrance to the hotel lobby. Slovenia is expected to start training this week ahead of Friday’s exhibition match.

Doncic’s long-term health is a popular topic of conversation, especially since his body would benefit from additional recovery time before training camp next season. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison was recently asked about the possibility of Doncic playing for Slovenia due to his short break from the NBA Finals.

“As far as playing for the national team, I think that’s probably one of his greatest joys,” Harrison said. “So I think as long as he can walk, he’ll probably go out and play for them. That would be my expectation.”

Doncic is undoubtedly going, but it’s unclear whether he’ll play for Slovenia or simply support his teammates from the sideline.
