Maryland Weather: Cooler temperatures are expected in late June

Heading outside won’t be as sweaty this week due to relatively cooler temperatures after record-breaking temperatures over the weekend.

Temperatures at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport reached 98 degrees on Sunday, June 23, breaking the highest daily record set in 2010 and 1894 of 97 degrees, according to a post from the National Weather Service.

The day before, BWI set a June 22 record high of 101 degrees, the first 100 degrees recorded in June since 2012. Baltimore’s highest recorded June temperature was 105 degrees in 1934.

In Maryland, “usually when the temperature hits 90 to 100 degrees, it’s going to be a record,” except in July, said Kevin Rodriguez, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Baltimore-Washington office.

The high temperatures are due to a large area of high pressure in the eastern United States that has been in place since last week, Rodriguez said.

In addition to a high of 38 degrees on Wednesday, temperatures are forecast to range from 80 to 90 degrees this week, with scattered showers and thunderstorms arriving before the weekend. A cold front will arrive late Wednesday afternoon, bringing scattered thunderstorms.

“The main threats will be damaging wind gusts and hail,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez gave some tips on how to stay safe during this unusually hot weather, saying people who aren’t as sensitive to heat should stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing and avoid exercising in the afternoon, which is the hottest part of the day.

His general recommendation for people who are sensitive to heat is to stay indoors in an air-conditioned room on Wednesday.
