Detroit Red Wings announce exhibition schedule: Eight games

The Detroit Red Wings announced their regular eight-game schedule on Monday.

The Wings will open the preseason on September 25 against the Chicago Blackhawks and will host the rival Original Six on September 27 at Little Caesars Arena. The Pittsburgh Penguins will visit LCA on September 28, and the Wings will also host the Toronto Maple Leafs (October 3) and the Ottawa Senators (October 4). The Wings travel to Buffalo to play the Sabers on September 30, then travel to Pittsburgh on October 1 and end in Toronto on October 5.

Ticket details can be found on the Wings website.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting showcase season as young defenders Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson will battle to show they should be a regular in the squad.

CARLOS MONARREZ: How is Yzerplan doing with the Detroit Red Wings? After five years, even Steve Yzerman isn’t thrilled.

Kasper, the team’s first pick in 2022 (8th overall), will also be in the spotlight to prove how far he has come in his development. He is having a strong second half with the Grand Rapids Griffins, although he will likely need more time in the AHL before he is ready for the NHL.

The exhibition season is also a chance for regulars to hone their readiness for the 82-game regular season. The Wings learned a cruel lesson last season about how important every point is: Even after winning their final three games, they missed the playoffs and tied the Eastern Conference No. 8 seed Washington Capitals with 91 points, then missed the playoffs in thanks to the tie-break.

The exhibition season will also be an opportunity for goaltender Sebastian Cossa (No. 15 in 2021) to show his progress and forward Nate Danielson (No. 9 in 2023) to get a look at top opponents.

Last year, the regular season schedule was released on June 27.
