The Texas Longhorns have hired Memphis strength coach Darby Rich as their newest staff member

Memphis basketball strength and conditioning coach Darby Rich has been hired by the Texas Longhorns, multiple sources told The Commercial Appeal on Saturday. Although no official statement has been released by either university, various affiliations have already confirmed the transfer.

Rich worked with the Tigers for three seasons and previously coached Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

A native of South Carolina and captain of the Alabama basketball team in 1991, Rich was instrumental in selecting two players in the 2020 NBA Draft: James Wiseman, who went second overall, and Precious Achiuwa, who went 20th overall. overall, both from Memphis.

During his six seasons at Texas A&M before joining Memphis, Rich saw nine of his players earn all-conference honors and three of them were named to the All-SEC first team.

Rich’s addition follows the departure of former Texas basketball health and performance director Cory Schlesinger, who was acquired by the Longhorns before last season. Schlesinger served as the Phoenix Suns’ head strength and conditioning coach from 2019-2023, where he spent time with former Texas star Kevin Durant and helped his team reach the 2021 NBA Finals.

Schlesinger helped keep the Longhorns healthy and on the field, and five of the team’s eight starting lineup appeared in all 34 games during the season. However, past injuries to seasoned athletes like Dylan Disu and Kadin Shedrick have discouraged them from playing in key matchups, and preventive care this season will be necessary to ensure a potentially deep NCAA March Madness run.

Rich will be key to keeping this area in Texas as the program enters its first season as members of the SEC, bringing with it a new wave of competition. The team already has various events on its schedule, such as the ACC-SEC Challenge and Maui Invitational, and will travel to Las Vegas on November 4 against Ohio State in a Hall of Fame Series event to start the season.

As head coach Rodney Terry enters his second full season at Texas, he is not shy when it comes to rebuilding the culture founded by Shaka Smart and questioned following the firing of Chris Beard in the 2022-2023 season. His newest addition in Rich will look to bring success and security to a fresh squad just in time for its move to the SEC.
