More than 60 delegates from Seattle traveled to Detroit to meet with President Espy and learn about her prosperity agenda.

More than 60 delegates from Seattle recently visited Detroit to learn about the city’s business startups and entrepreneurial culture and how a city-serving, top-notch research university can advance the well-being of the community.

“It was an honor to host leaders from another great American city,” said President Espy. “There is a buzz across the country about how special our city and university are. I was pleased to share more about our spirit and history of innovation and entrepreneurship, and how our Prosperity Program can support and strengthen our future success.”

The Seattle group included Mayor Bruce Harrell and other regional leaders, as well as representatives from companies such as Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft and Starbucks. Members of the University of Washington and Washington State University communities were also in attendance.

“We were honored when the Seattle Metro Chamber reached out to Wayne State University for a four-day best practices benchmarking visit to Detroit,” said Stacie Clayton, director of community affairs and event organizer.

At Wayne State, many leaders from across the university participated, including schools and colleges, as well as the departments of Economic Development, Research, Development and Alumni Affairs, and University Relations.

Key sites visited during the cross-city research mission to Detroit included the Hilberry Gateway at Wayne State, the Integrative Biosciences Center and TechTown. This in-person tour gave participants the opportunity to learn about Wayne State from an institutional, business and historical perspective, while also learning about the university’s innovative methods for attracting, retaining and succeeding students; its economic footprint in the city; and the significant role it plays in preserving Detroit’s cultural heritage.

“We are in a city that has defined innovation and invention,” said President Espy. “Our mission is to continue to bring new technologies, medicines, practices, companies and people to our city, and to develop and retain our unique talent – our Wayne State talent.”
