How hot will it be and when?

It’s getting hot in Nashville. According to the National Weather Service, a heat wave is expected across Middle Tennessee, especially Thursday through Sunday, when temperatures will reach the mid to high 90s.

“Heat index readings may also exceed 100 degrees, so unfortunately the humidity will increase how hot it actually feels,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Husted. “This heat wave is actually already underway in the Midwestern United States.”

The weather service describes a heat wave as a period of unusually hot weather, usually lasting more than two days, that may occur with or without high humidity. The weather service says heat waves could cover a large area and expose large numbers of people to dangerous heat.

Nashville won’t be the only area feeling the brunt of the heat. While this level of heat is not uncommon in Tennessee, it is rare in the north, such as Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Kentucky. Husted said the effects would be felt most in the northeastern United States.

According to Husted, average high temperatures in Middle Tennessee in July typically exceed 80 degrees, and this week most locations will be about 10 degrees above normal. Record high temperatures Thursday through Sunday are 100 degrees or higher, so while it won’t be record hot, it will still be pretty close.

“Either way, it’s still going to be pretty hot compared to what we usually have this time of year,” Husted said.
