Eskenazi Health encourages people to take the following actions to prevent heat-related illness:

  • Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you feel thirsty.

  • Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and wear light-colored clothing.
  • Work or exercise in hot weather while maintaining your pace.
  • If the house is too hot, take a cool bath or shower.
  • If you don’t have air conditioning, go to a mall or library, or find a cooling shelter.
  • Monitor people who are at higher risk of getting sick from heat: babies, toddlers and children
    older adults.
  • Check your local news for extreme heat warnings and safety tips.
